How To Choose a Suitable Laboratory Balance

The laboratory balance is an indispensable part of laboratory work, and choosing the right equipment is crucial for achieving effective performance and accurate results. There are many considerations in choosing the right laboratory balance for the job.

Things to consider when buying a laboratory balance

When you need to buy a new  laboratory balance, the first step is to consider the type of application to be executed. In addition to weighing, do you need the balance to contain built-in functions such as check and weigh or recipe? Where will the scales be used in the laboratory or field? Do you need to connect it to another device?

The second step is to determine the readability required for the balance. Readability is the minimum scale that a balance can display. Your application may have requirements for accuracy of results. If the chemical you want to weigh is closest to 10mg (0.01g), a balance with a readability of 0.001 is recommended.

Next, you need to understand the capacity required to complete your daily tasks. Capacity is the maximum weight that a balance can weigh. When calculating capacity, remember to include the weight of all the containers you might use.

Most balances can be weighed in different units. Some applications require specific weighing units. For example, scientific laboratory applications usually require grams and milligrams, and jewelry usually requires carats. The fourth step is to write down the units of measurement required for the task.

The step five is to determine the size of the pot. The balance must be large enough to hold the items to be weighed and the container to hold them during weighing. The balance position can also play a role in choosing the scale size; Space constraints can mean choosing a smaller platform.

Finally, you should also consider the need for additional functionality:

Do you prefer internal or external calibration?

Do you need to perform weights below equilibrium?

Can you weigh a living animal? Is dynamic weighing important?

To collect and record data, will a USB or RS-232 connection help?

Do you need to calculate the specific gravity of your balance? Some balances do this automatically.

Are you using or weighing any substances or items that may need to be considered between all-metal or plastic shells?

Is there a problem in the workplace that requires locking devices? Choosing the right balance is an investment; In the long run, the right work tools can increase efficiency, reduce waste, and even make money. Buying the wrong balance means sacrificing precision and accuracy; This could be a costly mistake. Still not sure which laboratory balance is right for you?
